The R.N.A.D. Broughton Moor, north of Workington, was used to store ammunition for the US Naval North Sea Squadron until 1987 when it was decided to close the depot. The ammunition ship SURIBACHI (built in 1955 and 511' in length) arrived off the port of Workington to receive the muntions held there. The transfer was carried out by helicopters. Regular contributor Eric Stamper had the great idea to ask one of the local friendly fishing boat owners to take him out to get some photographs. In 1988 a second ammunition vessel SAVANNAH completed the transfer.
